Celebration Exhaustion – Deaf, Hearing Loss & Listening Fatigue

I just love Christmas!  (see below for your FREE gift)  I know, I know – it’s still early, but I also love being organised!

It’s my favourite time of year when not just myself, but my family and friends are also off work. My emails are shut down and I’m safe in the knowledge that they’re not piling up whilst I’m out of the office!

Spending quality time with family and sharing food and drink together is so special. Watching children delight in their gifts and then getting to be a big child myself as we play games together is such fun!

However, Christmas comes with a cacophony of sounds – the music, laughter, high pitched squeals from the children, people shouting over the music, singing lyrics, the latest toys beeping away and the roast potatoes setting off the smoke alarm! Arrggghhh!

It’s usual for me to retreat to quiet room for a bit on my own. Just to give my ears and my thoughts a rest. Often I don’t realise until I’ve stepped away, how much of a relief it is. Having everything equally amplified, simultaneously, while trying to listen to one specific thing is exhausting! A few helpful facts about listening fatigue to help you recognise it:

What is Listening Fatigue

  1. Listening fatigue, also known as auditory fatigue or auditory exhaustion, is a condition that occurs when the auditory system becomes overwhelmed or strained from prolonged exposure to sound.

  2. For people who are deaf or with hearing loss, listening can be more tiring and require more effort because they may have to work harder to understand speech and other sounds. This can lead to fatigue and strain on the auditory system.

  3. Listening fatigue can be caused by exposure to loud noise or by listening to sound at a high volume for an extended period of time.

  4. Symptoms of listening fatigue may include difficulty understanding speech, discomfort or pain in the ears, ringing in the ears (tinnitus), and a feeling of tiredness or fatigue.

  5. To reduce the risk of listening fatigue, it is important to protect your hearing and your energy by taking breaks and resting your ears.

I’m delighted to be able to offer you a free sample of our Christmas colouring book and I urge you to look after yourself too over Christmas. Take little breaks and use this free gift to take little breaks to do a bit of colouring here and there. We’d love to see the results as well and look forward to seeing them in our network – join us and say hi!
